It's 1914 and the Panama Canal officially opened after 10 years of construction, Burnley beat Liverpool to win the FA Cup and World War One plunged Europe into chaos - AND a Dorchester resident is born.
Reg Thomas has been celebrating his landmark 100th birthday with Colten Care staff at Castle View in Poundbury.
His letter from the Queen brought back special memories for the centenarian who used to supervise conservation and maintenance work at Buckingham Place.
Staff and residents at Castle View presented Reg with a cake made by the home's chefs, sang happy birthday and wished him many happy returns. He’s also due to have a family party at the weekend.
Reg said: "I have managed to survive all these years. Work was important and having a job with variety helped. I was also involved in the Scout movement which helped a lot to keep me active."
He was involved in the Scouts from the age 13 to 60 where he rose to rank of commissioner, training new Cub leaders.
