7:08am 6th November 2014
A very special guest is making itself at home for five days in Dorset, as HMS Portland docks at her namesake port today.
The Type 23 frigate is due to arrive at around 10am before setting sail on Monday to undertake a challenging programme for the rest of the year.
Primarily visiting for regional engagement duties, the ship will, not be open to members of the public on this occasion.
Captain Asquith told Wessex FM: "My Ship's Company and I are very much looking forward to bringing HMS Portland into Portland. In particular, we are honoured to have been asked to take part in the Remembrance Parades in both Weymouth and Portland on Sunday."
The ship is one of the fastest in the Navy and has been part of major campaigns such as carrying out anti-piracy patrols.
HMS Portland has many affiliations to the Portland area including The Earl of Portland, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and Portland Town Council as well as the Royal Navy Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Weymouth Lifeboat and The Lifeboat College, Poole.
