Locals Launch Action Group Against Travellers Camp
8:27am 6th November 2014
Locals are putting up a fight against plans to turn the old Army camp at Chickerell into a temporary site for travellers.
A public meeting is being held at the Centenary Club in Weymouth tonight at 7pm, to create an action group.
Steve Cobb, who's a member of UKIP, has sent out 1,000 letters to get people to come along.
He told Wessex FM his main objections to the site;
"It's going to affect the saleability of houses up there. There won't be any benefit for all the trades that are up there, their businesses. We have spoken to the chap at a caravan site and he says he's already had people deciding not to buy a new caravan because of this potential travellers site."
"I think the council have taken the easy way out. They had a firm to do the consultations. Probably if you spoke to local people there would be other sites available, its just if they want to use them or not."
