Olympic Torch Party Ticket Fiasco Blamed on "Technical Issue"

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has apologised after large numbers of people missed out on wristbands to the Olympic Torch Relay Evening celebrations due to what they've called a "technical issue".

700 free bands were snapped up in just 5 minutes when they were relisted this morning (Monday 9th July 2012).

But many people complained they couldn't access the website to get one because the bookings page was asking for a password.

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council has since apologised for the fault. Brief Holder for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Ian Bruce said:

"Unfortunately, with computer systems it is difficult to know how a system will cope with a massive surge in demand until it goes live.  Due to the sheer volume of people visiting the booking page there was a technical issue where some users were shown a password protected page before the booking form itself. We apologise for this problem."

Even the dedicated ticket helpline was a source of frustration for people keen to get their hands on tickets to the free event on Weymouth beach this Thursday (12th July 2012). When people called for assistance, the line said "office was closed" and callers were cut off. Weymouth and Portland Borough Council have again apologised for the confusion.

Here's more from Brief Holder for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Ian Bruce:

"To support the online application process for the tickets, a phone line was made available for members of the public who do not have access to the internet.

"The phone line was available from 8am and calls were taken from people applying for tickets but unfortunately, instead of a 'lines are busy' holding message being given to customers while they waited for their call to be answered, a message saying the office was closed was given out instead. We do apologise for any confusion this caused."

All tickets to the event - featuring rapper Wretch 32 and Britain's Got Talent dance duo Twist and Pule - have sold out.
