South Dorset Politician Calls on Transport Secretary to Save Coastguard Chopper
12:00pm 26th July 2012
South Dorset's MP has renewed his appeal to save Portland's Coastguard Helicopter.
It comes after a record day of call outs for the emergency crews.
MP Richard Drax has written a letter to secretary of state for transport Justine Greening, urging her to rethink plans to scrap the chopper. He argues it's a crucial resource for the Jurassic Coast, and points to recent incidents like the flash flooding, where it was called out 8 times in one day.
In his letter Mr Drax also highlights the Helicopter's vital role in saving 3 fisherman this week off Lyme Bay after their boat sank leaving them stranded at sea for 10 hours.
As it stands Portland's Helicopter will be stood down in 2018.
