TA's Provide Security For Sailing Events

Sailing Security 2

9:15am 3rd August 2012

"Providing security at Weymouth's Olympic Venue is great practice for our soldiers" - that's from a top army Commander.

Over 200 part time soldiers from the South West were drafted-in to help after private security firm G4S failed to train enough staff before the Games.

The TA Units from around Dorset and neighbouring counties are tasked with checking bags at checkpoints and searching vehicles coming into the Sailing Academy.

The volunteers have set up base at Chickerell Camp were they'll stay for the duration of their assignment in Weymouth and Portland.

Lieutenant Colonel Dickie Trant of the Royal Wessex Yeomanry says Army reservists will play a vital role in domestic security in the future due to sweeping cutbacks across the Military, so this type of experience providing security is good practice.
