A Level Students At Weymouth College Achieve 99% Pass Rate

A levels Weymouth College

9:13am 20th August 2012

Students and staff at Weymouth College celebrated another year of excellent A Level results.

Results were collected by students at the College on Thursday 16th August and successes shared with tutors and friends made at the College.

100% of Weymouth College A Level students who had applied were offered a place at University for the second successive year compared to 52% nationally. For the last four years, Weymouth College has had 99% and above pass rates for A Level students.

Nearly 18% of Weymouth College students (compared to 8% nationally) studying A Levels this year have been offered a place at a ‘Russell Group’ university  who arecommitted to the highest levels of academic excellence in both teaching and research.

Whereas 6th forms schools tend to only accept GCSE grades A and B as entrance to A Level programmes, Weymouth College accepts students with grades A-C with the exception of Science and Maths. Many of these GCSE grade C students go on to achieve A and B grades at A level and get into prestigious universities; this achievement is not a standard outcome but is accomplished due to the high level of personal guidance and support provided by the College staff.

Student Alex Gough received an A* in Maths, A* in Physics, an A in Chemistry and an A in Further Maths; as well as a B grade for an extended research project. Alex was home-schooled by his mum before choosing Weymouth College to study his A Levels. Alex said: “I’ve really enjoyed the learning environment here at College, the lecturers are really inspiring.” Alex is planning to complete his degree with the Open University.

A couple of the first few students to arrive and collect their results were Niki Crawford and Paul Charles who achieved fantastic results of AAA and AAB. Niki intends to go onto Warwick University to study Sociology; whilst Paul will be going on to do History at Exeter University.

Niki said: “The lecturers have been brilliant and so helpful and it’s been great studying here. As a mature student (22), I was a bit worried about studying A Levels before I came to College, but since I started here, I have made lots of lovely friends and everyone here is just so supportive.”

Anastasia Murphy gained great results and secured her place at Brighton University from September to study international events management. During her time at College, she has appeared live on the TV programme ‘Question Time’ and organised a visit for Local South Dorset MP, Richard Drax to talk to the students.

Weymouth College Principal, Liz Myles said of the College’s achievements: “These results are a testament to the students’ efforts, brilliant teaching and learning; as well as supported students. The College offers additional opportunities to learners who need it most and this is a fantastic demonstration of how good learning at Weymouth College, really is.”
