Dorset County Show 2012 Breaks All Records!
4:27pm 3rd September 2012
EVEN before the gates were finally closed for another year last night, it was clear that the Dorset County Show had been a resounding success. You only had to look at the sea of people swarming through the 125 acre showground, and the exhausted but contented faces of the traders for proof that the Show had delivered, once again, on every possible count.
‘Whilst we are still waiting for final confirmation on figures, early indications show that it was a record-breaker in terms of visitor numbers’ said Sam Mackenzie-Green, Dorset County Show Secretary. We are confident we are at least 5% up on last year and have almost certainly comfortably exceeded our target of 60,000 visitors over the show weekend’
So what was the winning formula for 2012? ‘It has been a mix of things that has helped us to get ahead this year’ continued Sam. ‘The line up in the main arena provided a really good mix of attractions for the whole family. County Shows are very much part of the fabric of British summer holidays. Because many shows were cancelled due to bad weather, people really made the effort to travel the distance to get to ours. The sun shone for us on both days, providing motivation for our more impulsive visitors. We've also got our ticket pricing right. We've held the adult price at £10.00 for advance tickets with kids going free for 5 years now. So families can have a genuinely action-packed day out without breaking the bank. Last but not least, a good show is all about organisation. We couldn't put on a show of this magnitude without the commitment of our 250 dedicated volunteers.'
Surprise highlights at the Show included the last minute hosting of the finals of the English Sheep Shearing Championships. Dean Nelmes a local Dorset resident from Warmwell was lying third in the national Championships prior to this competition. The points he accrued by winning the English Sheep Shearing Championships put him into first place and the overall winner of the national title. Dean commented; ‘It was great to be on home turf and have the support of a local crowd at the show, cheering me on!’
The Dorset County Show 2013 will take place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September. Trade stand bookings are already being accepted. Visit www.dorsetcountyshow.co.uk or telephone 01305 264249 for more details.
