Pelican Sets Sail For Antarctica

Pelican Sets Sail For Antarctica

9:27am 23rd September 2012

A Pelican will set sail from Weymouth to the icy shores of Antarctica today (Sunday 23rd September)

The Tall Ship Pelican -- a sailing ship used to train local youngsters -- is attempting to re-enact legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton's Endurance voyage almost 100 years ago.

Endurance sailed from Plymouth in 1914 but never made it home.

Pelican isn't set to return until June 2013.

The voyage follows the original route of Endurance and it will be a Shackleton-themed jounrey with archive film footage and genuine artefacts on show.
