There's been a rise in the number of electrical fires in Dorset.

The County Fire Service has seen a near 18% increase in call outs compared to last year.

Officers say households are putting themselves at risk and today (Thursday 27th September 2012) Safety Officers are out in Littlemoor offering people advice and tips on how to stay safe in the home.

They can even set you up with a free home safety check where a Fire Safety Officer comes to your home and can check your smoke alarms, and replace them with new ones if needs be.

The Electrical Safety Council say: "in 2011, almost one million people repaired an appliance while it was still plugged in, 12.2 million people knowingly used faulty plugs or sockets and 2 million people trailed cables near hot surfaces or cookers. Around 70 people die and 350,000 are seriously injured each year."
