Petition Launched Over Charles Street Development
8:53am 11th October 2012
A plan to spend an extra £2m on the Charles Street development is facing mounting opposition from the public and some Councillors.
West Dorset District has backed new proposals to scrap an underground car park and build flats instead of a hotel.
Lib Dem Councillor Andy Canning has launched an online petition against the plans.
Developers Simons say original plans - that includes a hotel and underground car park - are no longer financially viable, and they need to make a change if prospective big name retailers are to buy shop space.
Instead, they want to scrap the planned car park and build more a deck of parking on top of the Fairfield Market site, and turn the hotel into flats.
Speaking to Wessex FM Councillor Andy Canning is disappointed the Council's Executive Committee has openly supported the new plans without talking to people in Dorchester. Click below to hear more.
