Free First Aid Training At Carers Rights Day
3:04pm 14th November 2012
Free training in life saving first aid will be on offer as part of a Carers Rights Day being held in Dorchester next month.
The event at the Dorford Centre in Bridport Road, Dorchester, on December 6, will include first aid training sessions and informal workshops giving advice and support to carers on a variety of topics including tax help for older people.
There will also be stands of information from the organisations that support carers, including The Greenwood Centre, Telecare, Alzheimer’s Society, Parkinson’s UK, Help and Care and others.
The day, which will run from 9.30am to 3.30pm, has been organised by St John Ambulance’s Carers Support Programme in partnership with Dorset County Council.
The first aid training will cover basic first aid skills, dealing with bleeding, burns, choking, fractures, hypothermia, how to perform a primary survey and how to put someone into the recovery position.
Julie McDermott, the Carers Support Programme Lead Manager, said: ‘Results from the 2001 national census showed there are more than 42,000 carers in Dorset. Carers often find themselves struggling to cope, needing advice and support this day will provide the support needed to continue caring.
‘Many carers are missing out on vital training and information to assist them in their caring role. This event is informative and friendly and it’s a good discover the huge amount of support available to carers and learn lifesaving first aid skills. Carers are at the front line when accidents or emergencies happen; for example, choking is very common.’
Julie added: ‘Unfortunately, research has shown that fewer than one in five people** (18%) would know what to do in a first aid emergency – St John Ambulance wants to change that so people don’t suffer unnecessarily.’
All places are free but limited and booking is essential. Lunch and a goody bag are included. To book or for more information on training for carers in Dorset contact Kerry Course on 01305 751160 or visit www.sja.org.uk/dorset.
