Fears Over Health Privatisation In Dorset

38 Degrees

(Updated 7:56am 22nd November 2012)

Dorset NHS officials have been lobbied by campaigners who're angry over fears of privatisation.

Campaign Group 38 Degrees, want our Clinical Commisioning Group - run by GP's - to write safeguards into their constitution to make it more transparent.

Calls were made after private company Virgin Healthcare were awarded the contract by NHS Dorset for a Lyme Regis Medical Centre.

Dorset NHS say they sought the views from local people and organisations about what they wanted from healthcare in the area between December 2011 and March 2012 (a report into their findings can be found by clicking here).

Councillor Ros Kayes from the Dorchester campaign says the taxpayer deserves to know what the CCG is up to, and re-writing the constitution would increase chances of more public consultations on any future changes to local services.

"They (CCG) need to know that ordinary people across Dorset really, really care about how healthcare is delivered and they need to take the public voice seriously. I hope they're going to be open to dialogue".

All health authorities will be replaced by CCG's next April (2013) and need to make yearly savings, so they have to consider providing healthcare at a lower rate and private companies bid for contracts.

Ros explains more about CGG's and the dangers of privatisation.

Meanwhile a spokesman for NHS Dorset said:

"During the period December 2011 – March 2012 views were sought from local people and organisations about what they wanted from healthcare in the area.

A report on findings from this engagement is available from the NHS Dorset website http://www.dorset.nhs.uk/getinvolved/lyme-regis.htm."

People who're interested in getting involved with the Weymouth 38 Degrees group can meet members tonight (Wednesday 21st November 2012) at 7pm at the Community Safety Fire Centre on Radipole Lane. There's also a meeting of the Dorchester Group at the United Reform Church on Charles Street, on the 29th Nov from 7pm-9pm.
