Sports Personality Nominee and Sailing Hero Ben Ainslie Calls Time on Olympic Career
7:25am 27th November 2012
Weymouth and Portland sailing hero Ben Ainslie has announced his retirement from Olympic competition.
It means 35 year old Ainslie, won't defend his Finn class title at Rio 2016.
He said it would be hard to top the incredible feeling he had after winning his 4th gold medal in Dorset this summer, where he became the most decorated Olympic sailor of all time.
Back troubles also contributed to his decision after admitting he struggled at times during the London Games after major surgery in February this year.
Ainslie will continue to sail in competitions though and is focused on his Americas Cup campaign.
The sailing star won his first Games medal - silver in the Laser fleet - at Atlanta 1996.
It was announced last night (Monday 26th November) that Ben has made the shortlist for Sports Personality of the year.
