The Ocean Spa on Portland's hoping to produce world class therapists of the future.
They're launching a private training school focusing on Spa Therapies.
It will be the only Spa school in the South West actually based within a spa offering students over 18 the ability to train in a real work environment.
Verna Herry, Managing Partner at The Ocean Spa, is spearheading the project. Verna herself is a highly qualified therapist with an honours degree in International Spa Management and her book on spa management entitled 'Passionate About Spas' is due to be published in 2013.
'The Ocean Spa, School of Spa Therapy' will incorporate a range of courses and programmes designed to meet the needs of the student, whether that means flexible hours of study, tailored subjects, or beginner and advanced courses. Courses will be taught in modules - incorporating a balance of home study and practical sessions, along with the option to use e-learning. There will also be a range of bolt-on subject options which students can choose to complement existing programmed courses.
Verna explains, "The practicing standards of Spa Therapists are set extremely high and I know we can establish a school which will produce world class therapists, with the skill and qualifications to work anywhere in the world in an industry that is flourishing." Over the last 5 years the Spa market has grown steadily and is estimated to be worth more than $250 billion, with the UK market worth $1.7 billion alone. Verna continues, "The main aim of the school will be to give our students the opportunity to learn in a living spa environment. They will gain first hand industry experience from the word go. We will also work closely with other major Spa employers and organisations to create opportunities for our students. For example I already have strong links with major international Spa employer Steiners One Spa World, which employ over 2,000 spa, salon and fitness professionals a year to work on luxury cruise ships travelling the world."
The school will be designed for students over 18 years old, encompassing: People wanting to add expertise to their qualifications; mature students; mothers back from maternity leave and those wanting to move from a beauty salon to a spa environment. Entry to the school won't be automatic, students will need to meet The Ocean Spa's entry criteria and complete an interview and admission process. The Ocean Spa's two main qualification awarding bodies will be: ITEC, the premier International Awarding Organisation and VTCT, the largest awarding body in the spa and service sectors and the first ever awarding body to offer beauty and spa therapy qualifications. VTCT is accredited by Ofqual and has been at the forefront of developing vocational system of qualifications in the United Kingdom for over 50 years. It also consults and complies at government level across the world to ensure its qualifications are recognised globally.
The experience and training gained at The Ocean Spa School of Spa Therapy will equip students with the skills needed to start a career in the beauty, complementary therapy and sports industries. Verna continues, "We will be offering our students an opportunity to develop and progress personally. With their new found skills and qualifications our leavers will be able to greatly enhance their income with a range of new employment opportunities and the chance to work for themselves. The career prospects and variety of options are both exciting and endless here in the UK and overseas."
