Transport Minister Invited to Visit Portland Coastguard Search Teams
7:22am 4th December 2012
Arguments against plans to scrap the Portland search and rescue helicopter have AGAIN been presented to the government.
Ministers want to axe the Coastguard chopper in 2017.
South Dorset MP Richard Drax met Transport Minister Stephen Hammond yesterday (Monday 3rd December) and asked him to visit Portland Search and Rescue Crews before making any final decisions, Mr Hammond said 'he'd give it some thought'.
Mr Drax says if the helicopter is grounded and we have a major incident off the coast we'll be in serious trouble; "our current helicopters are so busy, if they're scrapped in favour of newer models based further away, the new helicopters simply won't get to emergency call outs on time".
