Home-Start Harvest Ball Declared a Success

Mayor Of Dorchester Party

11:13am 5th December 2012

Local charity Home-Start West Dorset held their inaugural Harvest Ball on 12th October at Athelhampton House and declared the whole event a resounding success, raising almost £3000. Helen Horsley, Senior Organiser of the charity and a member of the Ball organisation team commented: “We’re absolutely delighted that the event turned out so well. We got off to an excellent start as we sold all our tickets by early September.”

“Our guest of honour was Dorchester Mayor Andy Canning and his wife Mel and party. Home-Start West Dorset is the Mayor’s Charity of the Year 2012, so we were delighted to have Mr Canning’s company at the Ball as well as his valuable support.”

“On the evening of the Ball everyone had a wonderful time. The food was fantastic and we’re extremely pleased that we chose Athelhampton as our venue. We had dancing to the music of local band The Sunroom, who were brilliant and the dance floor was full. I would say the majority of guests took the opportunity to have their photos taken by our Ball Photographer Mike Weeks, who was able to print off his stunning photographs instantly for people to take home with them as a memento of their night.”

“The prizes we had on the night were superb. We are extremely grateful to the local businesses who sponsored us and who were so very generous. We had 85 prizes in all, each of them worth a minimum of £5 and the majority were worth £20 or more. Our sponsors are too numerous to mention them all but we are especially grateful to Medusa Apothecary and Insight Opticians who each gave us prizes worth £120. More big prizes were donated by Boden, The Bull Hotel Bridport, The Dorchester Curiosity Shop, and Lindsay Beale Fitness. Others who were extremely generous include Waterstones, Wagamamas, White Stuff, Toni & Guy, SGM Hair and Tesco.”

Helen added: “The evening seemed to whizz by – which is a good sign of having fun! We had so many compliments and positive comments. It was such a success that I think we’ll be making it a regular event on our calendar.”

Vanessa Williams, Dorchester accountant and guest at the Ball commented: “It was a great night out. I hope it becomes an annual event!” While Wendy and Barnes Eveleigh from Piddlehinton said: “It was fantastic. We anticipated it being good but everything was wonderful; the food was stunning, the prizes were amazing. We had a brilliant time.”

Janet Kennewell, Chair of the Home-Start West Dorset Trustees, commented: “This was a new venture for us; we had never put on such a large event before but it all went very smoothly and all the months of planning and organisation paid off. We’re very grateful to the Ball Organisation Team of Camilla Thornton, Nicola Stickland and Helen Horsley for all their hard work. I’m delighted to say that the evening raised £2884 which will help us continue our work helping young families become more independent.”
