Weymouth Mayor's Christmas Message

Weymouth_and_Portland

8:35am 26th December 2012

The Mayor of Weymouth and Portland has paid tribute to local volunteers in her Christmas message.

Margaret Leicester not only thanked them for their work during the Olympic Games, but for their support in delivering charitable events and other services all year round.

Here's Margaret's message:

"2012 has been the most amazing of years!

Weymouth and Portland has been hugely privileged to be the host venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games sailing events.

We have achieved some amazing exposure across the world and received many messages of commendation from local people, visitors and from around the globe.

One thing that many of us may take for granted on a daily basis is the role that local volunteers play in supporting the delivery of charitable and other services.

We are very lucky that in our local community we have many people who have for many years made a huge contribution to local groups and organisations - sometimes with little thanks.

In this special year such local volunteering has been supplemented by the 550 Olympic and Paralympic Ambassador volunteers who were hard at work meeting and greeting people in the town centre, seafront and other areas.

Official LOCOG Games-maker volunteers also worked tirelessly within the Olympic venue(the sailing academy area at Osprey Quay) and at the athletes' Olympic Village to help ensure successful staging of the sailing events.

As we come to the end of 2012 I would like to say that I have been hugely privileged to have been borough Mayor for Weymouth and Portland in this Olympic year.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to all the volunteers who help make our day-to-day lives better; and to the Ambassadors and Games-makers who have made a special volunteer contribution this year.

I met many Ambassadors and Games-makers when I was out and about during the Games and their enthusiasm and commitment was clearly evident.

I am  sure that many of them will be keen to continue volunteering in some form or other and I know that over 250 have already signed up to do so.

So, very many thanks to all volunteers and very best wishes to all residents and visitors in the borough for a great Christmas and prosperous 2013."
