Dorset Blood Donors Needed Urgently
9:37am 4th January 2013
There's been a dramatic drop in blood stocks, and people in South Dorset are being asked to help.
The NHS is making an urgent appeal for donors, especially if your blood group is O Rh negative (O-).
The drop in blood stocks is being blamed on the busy run up to Christmas and the norovirus.
Firstly, the NHS says people have been forgetting appointments or simply running out of time to donate.
Secondly, the outbreak of norovirus made matters worse as a dramatic increase of people correctly cancelled their appointments, which further pushed blood supplies to a particular low.
O negative donors are being sought out specifically because they're known as the 'Universal donors', which means their blood can be given to anyone, proving vital in an emergency.
Anyone between 17-65, weighing more than 50kg (7 stone 12lbs), with general good health can donate.
