Violence Increase At Dorset Prison
9:34am 12th January 2013
Violence amongst prisoners and staff at Portland YOI has increased according to a report by the Independent Monitoring Board.
There's also concern about a reduction of staffing levels.
The report says fewer staff has meant less interaction with prisoners on the wings, but that situation is now slowly improving.
Violence amongst staff and prisoners has increased and the team which helps prevent suicide amongst inmates has been reduced.
The old education building remains unfit for purpose and single cells that have been converted to doubles have inadequate space.
But there was praise for the increase in the number of inmates released on temporary license, for the jail's rugby academy and for its allotments.
