MP Vows To Make Notorious Junction Safer
3:23pm 28th January 2013
West Dorset MP Oliver Letwin's vowed to solve safety concerns over the notorious Miles Cross junction on the A35 on the Bridport Ring Road.
In just under 10 years there have been 14 crashes notified to the authorities, at least one of them fatal.
Symondsbury councillor Gillian Summers told a public meeting the junction is confusing. Other speakers expressed concerns over speeding traffic at the location which is on a hill and bend at the western edge of the town.
Bridport Town Council had wanted support from parish councils for their idea for a roundabout there, but this received a mixed response from those attending.
Highways Agency staff told the meeting the junction didn't meet the criteria for a roundabout, which could cost up to £2 million at that location.
The meeting also heard increased traffic from the Broomhills Waste Transfer site and a forthcoming 700 home development could only make things worse.
So Mr Letwin's agreed to set up a meeting between all parties within weeks to make sure some measures are put in place with some urgency.
