The Pavilion will close at the end of May, but it won't be bulldozed!
The Management Committee at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has backed plans to lease the venue for community use.
Councillors voted unanimously in favour of putting the site up for tender following its closure.
The news was welcomed by campaign groups in the Council Chamber's public gallery who clapped and cheered when the verdict was announced this morning (Tuesday 5th February).
Dozens of people who've been fighting to save the seaside theatre spoke freely at the Committee meeting, calling on the Borough to save the Pavilion from being knocked down.
The famous landmark opened in 1960.
Community groups willing to take it over will now start negotiations with the Council before recommendations go before full council on the 21st February.
