Thank You For Your Towels
8:49am 6th February 2013
"Thank you so much for helping."
Those were the words of the RSPCA at West Hatch after receiving nearly 2000 towels, donated by Wessex FM listeners to help stricken guillemot birds washed up on our coast covered in a mystery substance.
Last night (Tuesday 5th February) we delivered the towels, dropped off here at Wessex FM, Weymouth Pavilion and Groves Nurseries in Bridport to help their recovery.
RSPCA Manager Peter Venn says before they can use the towels their staff have to work hard to free the birds from the substance that's stuck on them with several rounds of washing.
Now, after you rose to our challenge, RSPCA West Hatch manager says his people are pulling out all the stops to help the guillemots survive, and then thrive, with volunteers and even ex-staff members pitching in alongside employees working overtime.
He expects most of the 300 birds received so far but says it may take as much as five weeks care before they're ready to leave.
The RSPCA also received two cheques from Wessex FM listeners - each for £100.
