Beaminster Tunnel Ready for Main Work to Begin
7:25am 20th March 2013
The main work to fix the Beaminster Tunnel is due to start 9 months after 2 pensioners were killed in a fatal landslide there.
Work to clear land and vegetation at the tunnels entrance has been going on for weeks and the County Council say they now have access to most of the land.
Heavy machinery can now move-in to do the soil nailing to prevent future landslips.
Contractors will start the soil nailing on 2 April by drilling holes into the walls around the tunnel entrances. The first soil nails will then be inserted through these holes.
Contractors will start nailing on April 2nd and the County Council says they'll be working longer hours to make up for lost time. It was hoped the tunnel would re-open in May.
Many local businesses have complained the tunnels closure has had a negative effect on trade in the town.
