County Finals of a new poetry competition for teenagers have been held in Dorchester.

Competitors had to recite poems to a panel of judges at County Hall.

It was the first 'Poetry By Heart' event in Dorset, which is a national competition, set up by former Poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion, and hosted by Dorset's Library Service.

The judging panel comprised of Sara Biggs, an actress, Katherine Locke, writer and reader for the Bridport Prize,  Paul Hyland, poet and broadcaster, and Sharon Kirkpatrick, senior manager with Dorset Library Service.

Contestants who had made it to the finals were (in their running order):

Meg Best- Beaminster School

Ellen Lewis- Bournemouth School for Girls

Hazel Mayall- Budmouth College (Weymouth)

Francesca Crisante- Highcliffe School (Christchurch)

Evie Twyford- Shaftesbury School

Christian Howarth- St Aldhelm's Academy (Poole)

Andrew Philips- St Edward's School (Poole)

The winner was Hazel Mayall, a student from Budmouth College in Weymouth. She will now go on to the National Finals at the National Portrait Gallery, London in April.
