More Localise Clinics For Diabetics In Dorset
12:02am 24th March 2013
Better foot care for diabetics across Dorset is on the way.
Clinics will be set up in Dorchester , Weymouth, Bridport and Blandford to ensure those with the condition are seen more regularly and minimise the number needing to be seen at hospital.
The clinics will be run by specialist podiatrists for anyone who actively suffers with diabetic foot complications such as foot ulcers.
Consultant Podiatrist of Diabetes at Dorset HeathCare, Debbie Sharman, said:
"The new clinics have been introduced following the development of a community based strategy to reduce the number of amputations in the west of the country.
Worldwide diabetes related complications result in the amputation of a lower limb every 30 seconds with around 6000 people with diabetes have leg, foot or toe amputations each year in England alone. The risk of amputation amongst people with diabetes is 23 times that of people without the condition; our aim locally is to reduce this risk and help educate local people what they can do to minimise their personal risk, ultimately reducing amputations across the whole of Dorset."
