Weymouth Sailor Taking On Pirates

Sam Rockett - Argyll sentry 2013

10:41am 4th April 2013

A Royal Navy sailor from Weymouth is combating pirates and drug smugglers in the Atlantic.

21-year-old Sam Rockett is serving on board HMS Argyll.

The Marine Engineer Technician is helping West African naval and coastguard personnel improve their counter narcotics operations.

Sam who used to work in the Rock and Fudge shop has told Wessex FM he's proud of the work he's doing but is looking forward to seeing his family when he's back home in the summer.

Sam said: "I made the decision to join the Navy because it offered me a much more exciting way of life and a better career. Although I joined up to be an engineer, when I was offered the chance to do something different and exciting like be  a member of the boarding party, I jumped at the chance. The current work we are doing, working with the West African nations, is something I have never done before and I really enjoy it.  I am really looking forward to the next few months."
