Portland Coastguards had to call on the Lee on Solent based helicopter yesterday after its own was airlifting a woman suffering from a broken ankle at Durdle Dor. The other chopper went to a kitesurfer with a fractured leg off Poole.

In the first incident, the Portland helicopter helped South West ambulance when a woman sustained the fracture on the coastal path. Lulworth Coastguards attended at the scene and Wyke Coastguards manned the helicopter landing site at Dorset County Hospital A & E.

While that incident was ongoing, the Lee-on Solent helicopter was drafted in to a kitesurfer injured 400 metres out to sea. A shore based paramedic was with the victim in the water till the airlift  and transportation to Poole Hospital.

Earlier yesterday Weymouth RNLI assisted the yacht Cleo which had got into difficulties in the Portland Races. The yacht with 5 people aboard, made its own way back to Weymouth where they were observed by Portland Bill Coastguards and Portland Bill National Coastwatch.  They were met in Weymouth by Weymouth Sector Manager and given safety advice.
