Singer Fronts Durnovaria Silver Band
9:00am 1st June 2013
For only the second time in its 77 year history - Dorchester's Durnovaria Silver Band will be fronted by a singer.
Their first vocalist was Dame Vera Lyn, but this June it will be local teacher, actor and singer, Gareth Marks.
"It's an experiment", said Durnovaria Publicist David Henshaw. "When Gareth first turned up to practise with the band, I was quite nervous. The band wasn't used to working with a vocalist, and Gareth had never sung with a brass band. But the combination was magical, and the vocals really breathed life into these classic songs. If the practise sessions are anything to go by, the concert will be a real buzz - a great evening."
"This is the band's big spring concert, and an important occasion. We're raising money to purchase our former practise rooms at the Fordington Methodist Church to give the band a permanent home in the town and provide a community venue for other arts groups."
The concert takes place today (1st June) at 7.30pm, at the Dorford Centre, Top O' Town, Dorchester.
Tickets cost £5 for adults, £3.50 retired and other concessions and free for children.
Tickets may be available on the door, but they are selling fast, so pre-booking is strongly advised by credit card on 01305 259998, or from Dorchester Tourist Information Centre or Harmony Music on Trinity Street, Dorchester.
The band will also be back at Dorset County Show this September after a four year absence.
