Malicious Fire Started Outside Family Centre
10:27am 14th June 2013
Police have released a picture of a malicious fire started in Weymouth.
The incident happened at around 3.20pm on Monday 10 June 2013 outside the Horizon Family Centre belonging to Dorset County Council on Cromwell Road.
A mattress on a public footpath was set on fire, and the blaze then spread to some wooden fence panels nearby.
Fortunately Dorset Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the scene quickly in order to prevent the fire causing further damage.
Police Constable Neil Fitch, of Weymouth police, said: "This thoughtless act has damaged two metres of fencing, but this could have been a lot worse.
"It is lucky that the fire service managed to get to the scene in good time and extinguish the blaze before it spread to buildings nearby.
"Those responsible have shown complete disregard for property and the welfare of anyone who could have been walking in the area, and we are fortunate nobody was injured.
"I am appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or recalls any suspicious activity in the area at the time to contact Dorset Police.
"Anyone with any information about those responsible should report this to us as soon as possible."
No arrests have been made.
