Armed Forces Day Marches On

Armed Forces Day celebrations

Anticipation is building ahead of this weekend's Armed Forces Day celebrations in Weymouth.

The MOD has given £10,000 to the Borough to support the event.

This year the seafront parade will also recognise the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic.

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council Tourism and Culture brief holder Cllr Ian Bruce said:

"This is our borough's most prestigious annual event and a chance for all our residents and visitors to show their support for our armed services.  

"At the same time it is a spectacular parade and not to be missed.  

"We would like to thank the Ministry of Defence for their support, the 22 Engineer Regiment and the many veterans and associations who collaborate to help make this a unique occasion."

Planned events through the week include:

Saturday 22 June
-  From 10am - Historic military vehicles arrive on the Pavilion Forecourt  
-    Noon - Beach Assault followed by bridge building demonstration on Weymouth Beach (Pavilion end)
-    1pm - Approximately 60 historic military vehicles leave the pavilion forecourt and convoy through the borough to Castletown, Portland for an afternoon display  

Sunday 23 June
-   11am - Armed forces service and parade along Weymouth Esplanade
-   12.30pm to 4pm - Historic military vehicles on display on the beach and  harbourside
-    1pm to 3pm- Afternoon band performances on the Pavilion Forecourt
-   2.25pm - Lancaster flypast

Monday 24 June
10.30am - Armed forces flag raising - civic flag pole, Council Office, North Quay.

Wednesday 26 June
10am to 2pm - Veterans rendezvous together with exhibition at the RAFA "Wings" Club, Maiden Street, Weymouth.

Friday 28 June
10am to 2pm - Veterans rendezvous together with exhibition at the RAFA "Wings" Club, Maiden Street, Weymouth.
Weymouth and Portland Armed Forces Day 2013 will welcome veterans, residents and visitors to a packed programme of military and veterans commemorations and celebrations.
