Weymouth College Boys Football Academy remains top of the British Colleges Sport South West League following a commanding 7-1 win against local rivals Kingston Maurward on 5 February 2014.
Despite the tough conditions, a disciplined and patient performance saw Weymouth overcome their opponents as well as the wind to head in at half-time with a 2-0 lead at Redlands. After the break, Weymouth dominated play to score five more with Oakley Hanger netting a hat-trick. Hamish Smith, Aidan Wardlaw and Bryson Zondo also scored to help complete the rout.
This victory means the College, who next face bottom club Bridgewater College away on 26 February 2014, stay top of the BCS South West League, having lost just one game all season. On 19 March 2014, the College play second-placed LEAF Academy, who have two games in hand; a match that could yet be a title-decider.
Academy Coach, Marcus Biles, said ‘The boys have been professional in their approach to every game this season so far and I believe this was the difference between the two teams. We took the correct approach when playing in to the wind which enabled us to control the second half when we had the advantage. We have four games left so it was an important result for us in terms of confidence moving forward and goal difference, because this could be the determining factor in who wins the league’.
Weymouth College Boys Football Academy provides talented young players the training and facilities to develop their sporting performance. Academy players have a unique timetable that offers dedicated coaching time delivered by FA-qualified professionals alongside full-time vocational study. Players also have the opportunity to attend England trials and complete their own FA coaching awards.
The Academy runs a competitive selection process through practical trials which must be attended by all players. Entry to the Academy programme is for one year and all returning players must retrial for a place in their second year. The Academy trials will take place on the 3G artificial pitch at Redlands Community Sports Hub in May.
