Cricket - Dorset Play Their Second Pre Season Friendly
9:30am 22nd April 2014
Dorset’s second friendly fixture of the 2014 season saw them away to Wiltshire CCC at South Wilts Cricket Club.
Wiltshire won the toss and elected to bat on an extremely attractive looking dry pitch under a cloudless blue sky. With the first 3 wickets falling relatively cheaply, Dorset may have thought they were going to do considerably better than the middle order Wiltshire batsmen had in mind. Joe Breet (38), Neil Clark (74), Ed Young (26) and Michael Coles (25) took the score from 80-3 to a very creditable 253-8 before Dorset mopped up the tail-enders and bowled Wiltshire out for 269 in 49.2 overs. Mark Wolstenholme 10-0-51-5 was the pick of the bowlers with Sam Thomson 7.2-1-26-2 and Matt Carpenter, Ed Denham and Tom Hicks picking up one wicket apiece.
Dorset’s innings didn’t exactly get off to a flying start when Masoor Khan was adjudged LBW with the first delivery! Michael Porter (29) and Josh Lawrence (22) were starting to build a good partnership when Lawrence was caught off a spectacular one-handed diving catch by Henry Langford. Progress was very slow, with wickets falling at regular intervals and, with the only 50+ partnership being that of Aaron Williams (37) and Tom Hicks (34), the visitors were finally dismissed for 189 in just 41.1 overs.
A very disappointing result for the Dorset boys who were on such a high after last week’s victory over Hampshire 2nds but at least no points were lost. Let’s hope that, when the season proper starts in just under 2 weeks, having tasted victory and defeat, they’ll know which one they prefer.
