Date Set For Bart's Bash
8:05am 17th June 2014
A date has been set for a mass sailing event in memory of Dorset Olympian Andrew Simpson.
On 21st September sailing clubs all around the world are going to be taking part in "Bart’s Bash", a huge race event which thousands have already signed up for, including loads of clubs in Dorset.
Participants hail from as far as Australia, South America, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and all over.
It's organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation to raise money and inspire the next generation of young sailors.
Andrew, affectionately known as Bart, was tragically killed in a sailing accident while training for the America's Cup a year ago (2013).
The Foundation say "Bart’s Bash" is the perfect event to celebrate Andrew's life:
"This race is a metaphor for how Andy lived his life - it's about valuing what we have that is great, competing at the highest level, seeking to support every up and coming sailor, sharing experience, providing encouragement, expecting dedication and commitment."
The foundation was set up by Simpson's friends and family and is based at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy in Portland.
The centre was opened by Sir Ben Ainslie and Iain Percy last month.
