Weymouth Ready To Host Summer Festival Of Sport
8:38am 17th June 2014
Sports fans in Dorset are in for a treat this summer as Weymouth prepares to host a summer of sporting events, to mark the second anniversary of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Dorset Festival of Sports, organised by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, will take place between Wednesday 16th July and Sunday 3rd August.
Visitors will have a chance to try their hand at sports on Weymouth Beach, with beach volleyball, football and rugby on the programme.
There's also the Ecover Blue Mile. Two days of water sports such as open-water swimming and kayaking for those who don't mind getting a little wet.
Disability sports are also well represented, with the Dorset Schools Disability Beach Sports Festival opening the event on July 16th and the Adults Disability Beach Festival on the 28th. Both will give disabled visitors the chance to sample water sports like sailing and paddle-boarding.
Organisers say they want to keep the 'legacy of the Games' going by getting more people into sports and hopefully finding a star of the future. Colin Jamieson of Dorset County Council told us:
'We're proud that this year's events will give over 500 Dorset children and adults with disabilities the chance to develop their potential and try a fantastic range of sports and activities.
'Who knows, it may even launch the career of a future Paralympian.'
