Weymouth Bandits Come From Behind To Secure Win
6:33pm 3rd December 2014
The Weymouth Mission Fitness Bandits hit the road for their second Group B Cup game in a week looking to secure a place in the knock-out rounds of the Cup competition. Going into the game both teams had everything to play for. The Div1 Bandits, with a squad of 7 including a number of key absentees, were without an away win for the season and the Div 2 Revolution boasted a full squad, home court and a winning regular season record.
Home court familiarity paid immediate dividends with the sharp shooting Taunton side registering a number of 3 point shots in the opening quarter. Weymouth maintained their heads and a level score by sharing the ball to find high percentage looks at the basket with 6 of the 7 Weymouth Mission Fitness Bandits scoring in the first quarter. Despite the initial period ending 3 points to Taunton's favour the even scoring that has been a trademark of the Weymouth Mission Fitness Bandits' victories this year kept the team composed.
Weymouth Mission Fitness Bandits continued to hone their offensive play throughout the second quarter with Balciunas, Steel and de Bertrand earning points down low and Kinder and Dean with makes from long range. The home side continued their good shooting form in the face of Weymouth's gelling team defence with the half ending 38-34 to Taunton
The ascendant Weymouth Mission Fitness Bandits continued their game plan into the second quarter. As Weymouth defensive strengthened further Taunton's shooting from range faltered allowing Weymouth's forawrds to clear up defensive rebounds time and time again. Weymouth capitalised on the counter attack and dominated the offensive rebounds with Balciunas and Steel putting points on the board and Manley and Canham making the home side’s defensive errors pay at the free throw line. With all players finding the score sheet Weymouth Mission Fitness Bandits dominated the quarter 26-12 to start the final period with a 10 point advantage.
Under renewed pressure from the home side Weymouth Mission Fitness Bandits maintained the lead throughout the final quarter. Jake Kinder hit 2 timely three point shots before fouling out to help secure a 78-67 victory.
Senior club statesman Chris Canham said, "Despite being down at the half I knew that if we continued to play our style of basketball that we would come through to win this important cup game."
