Slam Dunk Day of Basketball
5:31pm 5th September 2012
September 1st, 2012 saw the ‘Slam Dunk the Funk Basketball Invitational’ host five basketball teams from the surrounding area, all convening on Weymouth College for a packed day of basketball that would see all three Weymouth teams complete against some of the counties best. Teams spent the day locked in competitive games that featured nearly 60 players, all attempting to shake the summer rust and prove they were the top team going into the new 2012/13 season.
Organiser Alex Fuhrmann, “This was a fantastic day all round. Having 60 players in the same area; talking, discussing and competing in fast, action packed matches. We had a good amount of spectators that came down to support the Weymouth teams and we hope as we host this event each year the word will spread.”
Highlights of the day included a very tough matchup between Weymouth Cowboy and Yeovil Jets who spent all game going back and forth, settling on a tie by the final whistle. There was also an extremely rare event as Fuhrmann (playing for Weymouth Bandits) on attempting to pass the ball to a team mate, launched the ball over the entire length of the court to throw the ball inadvertently into the basket causing a welcomed stir from the spectators.
Tanya Weakley, spectator, “Weymouth’s three teams featured dozens of players from the borough who have been developing through the Weymouth club over recent years, proving the effort and determination shown by Weymouth Basketball Club has been paying off.”
Weymouth Basketball will attempt to run the competition on a yearly basis, though until then; the new 2012/13 is fast approaching as the Weymouth Raiders host their first home game at Weymouth College, Sept 27th against the Exmouth Jesters (tip 8pm).
