Medal Success for Team GB After Final Day of Sailing Called Off
2:58pm 6th September 2012
Helena Lucas has won gold at the Paralympic Sailing Regatta on Portland.
She topped the medal table last night (Wednesday 5th September 2012).
Low winds today (Thursday 6th September 2012) meant the final day of sailing had to be called off and the gold went to Team GB.
She becomes the first British woman to win a gold medal in Paralympic sailing
Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell ensured it was a memorable day for Paralympics GB's sailors as they claimed SKUD two-person class bronze.
Britain hadn't won a full Paralympic sailing medal since the sport joined the full Paralympic Games programme at Sydney 2000. These medals comes in addition to the gold medal won by the British Sonar team of Andy Cassell, Kevin Curtis and Tony Downs when the first Paralympic sailing event took place as a demonstration event at Atlanta 1996.
