Basketball - Taunton Revolution 96 – 56 Bridport Evolution, Somerset Basketball League
10:30am 28th September 2012
THE new look Bridport Evolution basketball team were overpowered by a physical Taunton Revolution side as they suffered their first defeat of the season on Monday night.
Bridport travelled to Taunton buoyed by the return of experienced trio, Tony Glover, Ross Hughes and Dan Park.
However injuries elsewhere in the squad meant that Bridport still lacked height and a strong Taunton side were able to take advantage of this and boss the inside game, which eventually gave them victory on the night.
Bridport began the came sharply, continuing with the tough defence that got them the victory in their first game, but their defensive efforts were equalled by a Taunton side who seemed unable to miss in the opening exchanges.
Despite Taunton’s shooting streak Bridport remained close throughout the first quarter thanks to three pointers from Craig Sorrell and Dan Park and a late three point play from Tony Glover.
In the second quarter the Bridport side were able to match the home team point for point with Dave McNiece, Jeff Robertshaw and Ollie Everitt all adding their names to the scoresheet, leaving the team just ten points adrift at half time.
Bridport’s lack of match fitness was exposed early in the third quarter though as the home side extended their lead from 10 points to 19 in a little less than three minutes.
In the fourth quarter, with the game becoming increasingly out of reach, Coach Tom Glover took the opportunity to blood some of his less experienced players who impressed as they prevented a determined Taunton side from reaching a triple figure score for the second consecutive game.
Coach Glover said: “We came into the game as underdogs and Taunton fully expected to win, so we gave them a scare, and if it hadn’t been for a momentary lapse of concentration early in the third quarter we probably could have pushed them to the finish.
“It’s disappointing to lose but this is a tough league and we have a lot of players who are new to this so I’m pleased with how we’ve done in our opening games.”
Bridport’s next game will be away to Crewkerne Thunder on Thursday, October 11th.
Players and points – Sorrell 21, McNiece 8, Tom Glover 7, Tony Glover 5, Park 5, James White 4, Robertshaw 2, Everitt 2, Ross Hughes 2, King and Altuzarra.
