Basketball: Weymouth Cowboys 50 - 105 South Coast Tigers
7:52am 22nd November 2012
Weymouth Cowboys travelled to Carter School in Poole to play South Coast Tigers. The Weymouth side were looking for their first win of the season after loosing their first three matches.
A depleted Cowboy side travelled to their closest rivals for a cup game convinced they should win against a lower leagued team. Opting for a zonal defensive formation, Weymouth soon discovered their opponents had claws and a ferocious bite. The fast paced first half ended with the feline side doubling the weary Cowboys score 25-51.
There were positives to take from the first half performance, especially some good shooting from Gerry Legg and some exceptional rebounding from Rich Wheeler and Mike Dixon. Player coach Eric Olson Decided a man to man Defense may tame the Tigers and showed instant promise stopping inside scoring from the home side. Weymouth passed well at times resulting in easy baskets for the trailing team. The third quarter was a high scoring one for Weymouths Gerry Legg as he netted 11, but the Poole side soon changed their scoring woes by gunning outside shots maintaining an ever expanding lead. With a 34 point lead going into the final quarter the result was inevitable for the travelling side ending with a 50-105 loss.
Coach Olson, although disappointed with the loss remarked "When we didn't turn the ball over and give away so many offensive rebounds we passed the ball pretty well, finding open men for high percentage shots, which is what we practice the most".
