A man has been detained after grabbing French president Nicolas Sarkozy and attempting to pull him over a barrier.
Mr Sarkozy was shaking hands with people in the crowd during a visit to Brax in south-west France when the incident happened.
He reached over a metal barricade to greet onlookers when the man roughly grabbed his suit by the shoulder and pulled him.
The leader started to lose his balance and fell backwards but managed to right himself before he hit the ground.
Security officers intervened and pulled the assailant to the ground before detaining him. Police said he was unarmed.
An official at the national police service said the Frenchman lives in the Lot-et-Garonne region and works in the theatre business.
The 32-year-old, who has not been named, was being questioned in the nearby town of Agen.
Mr Sarkozy, who is married to former model Carla Bruni, is expected to run for re-election next year.
