Fancy doing the Christmas Day Harbour Swim?

27th November 2016

christmas day harbour swim

It's a fixture on the Weymouth calendar for as long as we can remember.

The Christmas Day Harbour Swim attracts hundreds of participants and even more spectators!  Last year was the most popular ever, with no less than 336 people taking to the water!

Most importantly, they helped raise a total of £23,000 for charities and good causes.

Organised by Weymouth & Portland Lions, there are a number of categories:

  • Family Fun Swim - non competitive, open to anyone over 7 years old
  • Junior Competitive Swim - for youngsters aged between 7 and 16 years old
  • Ladies Competitive Swim
  • Open Competitive Swim

Online registration closes at 4pm on Friday 23rd December, with the first swim underway at 11am.

Click here for registration and full details

Good luck!  Do let me know if you are doing the Christmas Day Harbour Swim for a special reason, and I'll give you a mention on Wessex FM.

It was great to have Sasha Hughes pop into the Wessex FM Breakfast Show.

She's leading this year's appeal to collect shoeboxes filled with Christmas gifts and useful items for homeless people in Dorset.

There are a number of local collection points, and a list of suggested items.... download the Homeless Christmas Shoebox Appeal poster (pdf)

Take a listen to my chat with Sasha:

Meet Blade the Falcon

14th November 2016

We regularly get phone calls and messages from people who have lost their pets, and thankfully on many occasions we have been able to help reunite pets with owners.

It's almost always dogs and cats - but last week we reported a lost falcon for the first time!

Blade had flown off, but was later found safe and well.

Colin, Blade's owner, surprised Maria and I by popping round to see us at Wessex FM HQ ... and Maria was in charge of her!

Merchant Navy Association Appeal - Done!

4th November 2016

merchant navy association memorial

I love it when radio can make a difference to people's lives, and there was a fine example of that this week on the Breakfast Show.

We got a call from the Merchant Navy Association of Weymouth and Portland, who were appealing for help in completing the building work on their memorial to those local sailors and fishermen who have lost their lives at sea.

So we interviewed Simon Avery from the Association on the Breakfast Show.  Within the hour, there was a team of Military Preparation and Construction students from Kingston Maurward College ready to go and help.

I went to see them at the site, on the Esplanade near the Pier Bandstand, to find out more:

dennis barbecue tips

It's always great to see Dennis from the Fantastic Sausage Factory in Weymouth!

He popped into the studio to treat us to sausage sandwiches on National Sausage Week, and answered our very important sausage questions...

Should you grill or fry?  Should you prick?  Red or brown sauce?
