Matt's 'Colossal Ten' for Weldmar Hospice

Matt Smith, Fundraising Manager at Weldmar Hospice, is taking on twelve very diffrerent challenges in 2017 to mark his 10th anniversary working for the charity, and he's like you to join him on any that interest you!

Danceathon and Colossal 10 - DONE!

6th November 2017

It may have been bonfire night but I was ending Matt’s Colossal 10 with a bang, taking on the final challenge, the 10 Hour Dance-a-thon.

Joined by family, colleagues and supporters of Weldmar, we started stepping at 9.00am at our in-patient unit, Joseph Weld Hospice.

The first few hours went quickly but we soon realised how long ten hours was and our muscles and joints were also feeling the strain!

With supporters dropping in throughout the day and handfuls of jelly babies to keep us going, spirits were high throughout as each hour passed closer to the end of Challenge number 10.

At the clock approached 7.00pm, the party tunes were in full swing and we had realised that we hadn’t just completed a full 10 hours of dancing.

We also had covered 28 miles in distance, burnt over 4,000 calories and stepped over 65,000 times.

It was certainly tougher than anticipated but an incredibly rewarding challenge and a fantastic one to end my 12 months of challenges for Weldmar Hospicecare.

I am still currently in quite a bit of pain however I will be spending the next couple of weeks looking back at the 10 challenges I have taken on this year to raise money for our local hospice.

I will be sharing those memories as well as videos from all 10 challenges on Saturday 18th November, when I will be joined by Carl Ashwin from Wessex FM as we talk through the past 12 months.

There will also be live entertainment throughout the evening from just some of the acts who have been involved with Weldmar in the past 10 years of my time with the charity.

It is sure to be a fantastic evening and we really hope you are able to join us.

Tickets are available from www.weld-hospice.org.uk/colossal or by phoning 01305 261800

Nine Challenges Down ... One To Go!

31st October 2017

Challenge Number 9 Complete!

On Saturday 28th October I was faced with challenge number 9 of Matt’s Colossal 10.

After a drive to Cornwall, I stood looking at England’s fastest and longest zip wire. Easy, some might say, however lying face down, on the edge of a ledge about to plow up to 60mph through the air, easy wasn’t the thing going through my mind.

After the first ten seconds, once the initial shock was out the way, it actually was an incredible feeling, albeit a short and brisk challenge, it was another one complete.

So that leaves just one challenge left, the 10 Hour Dance-a-thon taking place this Sunday between 9am-7pm at Joseph Weld Hospice in Dorchester. When the clock strikes 7pm on Sunday, all 10 challenges will be over and it will be time to look forward to the finale evening on 18th November, which everyone is invited to attend.

Borneo Jungle Trek - Done!

27th October 2017

borneo weldmar

On Friday 13th October I took 15 people to join me on the Borneo Jungle Challenge, the 8th in 10 challenges as part of my Colossal 10.

After a 27 hour journey from leaving the hospice to arriving in Borneo, we were already exhausted before the trek had even started!

On Sunday 15th we took our first steps into the jungle, our home for the next five days. We soon realised that the humidity was going to add to the challenge and after not so long, knew we would also have to contend with torrential rain throughout the five days.

Each evening we went to bed with wet clothes and boots, only to put them back on again the next morning. Our meals consisted heavily of plain rice and the jungle was filed with leeches ready to attach themselves to our skin for their feeding time!

At night, the rain and wind continued resulting in very little sleep each evening and that was before the snorers in camp started drifting off to sleep.

Each day the inclines got tougher, the ground got more slippery and we all became more exhausted.

However, the sense of pride and achievement as we crossed the finish line as a strong group was incredible. Although this was a tough challenge, we all completed together, helping each other along the way ensuring that everyone finished and was proud of what they had achieved.

I am extremely proud of all of the trekkers and it was genuinely a pleasure to join them on the Borneo Jungle Challenge.

Would I go back? Maybe not for a while, my walking boots are still drying out!

So that leaves just two challenges left. This weekend I will be taking on England’s highest and fastest flat laying zip wire with speeds up to 60mph. Next weekend will see my final challenge, the 10 hour dance-a-thon will applications still open online at www.weld-hospice.org.uk/dance.

But to end my year of challenges, we are holding a finale evening on Saturday 18th November at Thomas Hardye School Theatre. There will be live entertainment, videos of all the challenges and we will be joined by Carl from Wessex FM too to chat with me about the past 12 months. Tickets are available now at www.weld-hospice.org.uk/colossal or by calling 01305 261800. I’d love to see you there!

Challenge number 7 complete!

30th September 2017

On Friday 22nd September, me and eight other supporters gathered at the hospice for the start of my seventh challenge, the Shop-to-Shop Cycling Challenge.

Taking on 170 (it ended up being actually 180!) miles of Dorset visiting as many of our Weldmar shops as we could in just three days.

After being cheered crossing the start line, we were off along the country roads towards Bridport.

As the day went on, the hills became steeper and our legs became heavier. I knew this was going to be a tough challenge as the days went on.

Each shop gave us a fantastic reception as we approached, cheering, waving balloons and offering sweets and snacks to keep our energy levels up.

We also had a lead and rear support vehicle on the challenge, such an important and vital part of keeping our morale high and ensuring that we were safe at all times.

As we approached the finish line on Sunday 24th, the feeling of pride (and pain!) was incredible. Nine people completed 180 miles in just three days, raising vital funds for Weldmar Hospicecare.

Here’s a video of challenge number 7:

So, that leaves three challenges left to complete. We will also be holding a finale evening in November to highlight the end of Matt’s Colossal 10, full of entertainment, videos and interviews. Tickets will be on sale soon and the information will be put up on this blog.

Challenge 6 complete!

21st September 2017

On the last weekend of August, I travelled to Scotland with a team of other supporters to take on the 3 Peaks Challenge as part of Matt’s Colossal 10.

After a late night we were up early to tackle the challenge starting with Ben Nevis, then Scafell Pike and finally, Snowdon. No sleep or hotels in between mountains, just a minibus and lots of caffeine.

Although we did not complete the challenge within the 24 hours we had hoped, the challenge was tough and conditions on Scafell were extremely poor, and everyone completed the trek in one piece, despite lots of aches and pains.

Here is a roundup of the 3 Peaks Challenge.

So that leaves four challenges left and over the weekend on 22nd - 24th September I will be taking on my 170 mile cycling challenge between all of Weldmar’s charity shops.
