b-side - Souvenirs: Migratory Objects

Outpost, 77 Fortuneswell, Portland, DT5 1LY

Artists Louise Atkinson and Christian Edwardes explore the souvenir: that beloved pocket money treasure, that embodiment of kitch, that memento of a unique encounter that can never be revisited in its ‘original’ sense.

Louise Atkinson’s collection of forty-eight iconic sculptural "souvenirs" represents cities in England. Vibrant and colourful creations inspired by heraldic imagery, they incorporate cultural landmarks, mythology, and historical / contemporary figures from each respective region.

Christian Edwardes’ work engages with various aspects of heritage and topography, considering souvenirs as more than nostalgic remains of extraordinary places and occurrences. For a recent show in Australia, he produced works that explored souvenirs as tokens of exchange:

“The works I produced were, in part, an attempt to find a connection to a landscape that I only knew through the gifts and tourist ephemera that would return with my grandmother on visits to see her daughter—my aunt.”

WESCA - Earth Pulse

Eype Centre for the Arts, St. Peter's Chapel, Mount Lane, Eype, Bridport, Dorset, DT6 6AR

An exhibition of artwork by members of Wessex Contemporary Arts (WESCA) inspired by the energies, movements and events that surround us.

If you haven't already visited Eype Centre for the Arts, the solitary chapel on the hill above the tiny seaside village of Eype, which now serves as a Church and Centre of the Arts with it’s wonderful views along the Jurassic Coast, it is well worth a visit. Especially to see this exhibition, so ideally suited to this venue. The work by members of Wessex Contemporary Arts reflects the energy and movement of the natural world we inhabit and which we can so easily take for granted. The work is a mix of abstract and figurative, 2D and 3D all in its way challenging not only a conventional view of art, but challenging us to look again with fresh eyes at what is around us, appreciate and reflect. You will be able to purchase a cup of tea or coffee, enjoy the serenity and cool of the place as you look at the exhibition, maybe buy an exhibit, before perhaps edging your way down the narrow twisting road to the beach in the village below.
If you would like to be among the first to see the exhibition you are welcome to join the artists at the Preview on Saturday 22nd June, between 2 and 4pm.

Wessex Contemporary Art is a group of nearly thirty professional artists all of whom either live or work within a fifty mile radius of Sherborne in Dorset. The group meets once a month to discuss policies, exhibitions and to lend support to it's members. The Group likes to remain contemporary and professional and is always encouraging new membership and new ventures and exhibitions.
WESCA has a long history, beginning life in Sherborne House, but now encompasses selected artists from Wiltshire, Dorset and Somerset.

Artists exhibiting:
Jane Burden Justin Orwin, Marilyn Rose, Rita Brown, Jeremy Marshall, Shirley Cousins, Jindra Jehu, John Bartholemew , Helen Simpson, Terri Hogan, Elizabeth Adam.

On: 11am Sat 22nd Jul 2017
Until: 4pm Sun 30th Jul 2017
