Appeal launched for the families of the Weymouth and Portland fishermen

People and businesses in Weymouth and Portland have been rallying round to help the families of David McFarlane, Jack Craig, and Robert Prowse, who tragically didn't return home.  Their boat, the Purbeck Isle, was later found at the bottom of the sea some miles from Portland.

Now, the Weymouth and Portland Licensed Boat Owners and Fishermen's Association has launched an appeal fund to help the families of the fishermen.

There are a number of local people and businesses who have already lent their support to the campaign.  If you would like to make a contribution, you can send it to:

  • Weymouth and Portland Licensed Boat Owners and Fishermen's Association

Mayor and Mayoress of Weymouth and Portland Graham and Mary Winter have set up a book of condolence at the council offices in Weymouth.  The Mayor told Wessex FM, "My wife and I decided to set up the book after visiting the floral tributes by the quayside. It's such a tragedy and it's hit the community quite hard even though they're not involved directly with the sea".

If you are also doing something to help contribute to the fund, please contact us.

Fishermen Remembrance Night

Friends of the three crew of the Purbeck Isle fishing vessel will gather at Portland Bill in an act of remembrance on Friday the 1st of June 2012 at 8:30pm. As a mark of respect, at 9pm, prayer lanterns will be launched into the night sky.

It’s anticipated that a number of motorbikes will leave Portland Bill in a procession for Weymouth. The friends of Jack Craig, Rob Prowse and David McFarlane would like to invite the public to come and remember the crew lost off Portland. It is expected at a large number of friends/family will attend to pay their respects and it’s hoped that the residents of Portland and Weymouth will join them. In this small community this would be the final opportunity to say good bye to two of the crew who are still missing.
