Join the thousands of people who descend on the Georgian Market town of Alresford in Hampshire to celebrate the wonders of one of the original superfoods, watercress.

The town was built from the riches of the watercress industry, a crop grown in flowing springs bubbling up into the watercress beds of the surrounding farms. In its heyday it travelled up to London on the Watercress Line to be sold in the Victorian markets such as Covent Garden.

Today the town celebrates watercress with its annual Festival marking the start of the UK season with a range of slightly eccentric but oh so British activities: the crowning of the Watercress King & Queen who dispense freshly harvested watercress as they parade through town, cookery demos, food and craft stalls, music, entertainment and the piece de resistance, the World Watercress Eating Championships. Try your hand at beating last year’s winner by eating 85g of watercress faster than 41.6 seconds!

There's a petting zoo and fun for the all the family - you can even enjoy a ride on the Watercress Line; park at Ropley and take a park and ride with a difference right into the heart of things at Alresford!

Throughout the day watercress farmers will be handing out freshly harvested watercress for free - although you will be encouraged to make a donation all in aid of local children's cancer charity, The Joe Glover Trust.

Join us on 19 May from 10am and enjoy all things watercress – it’s oh so good for you!
