The programme includes Schumann’s romantic and lyrical Cello Concerto No. 1, which was never performed in his lifetime. It requires an interpreter of the highest order and the Bridport Chamber Orchestra is delighted to welcome Arturo Serna performing as the soloist for this lovely work. Arturo is well-known for his passionate and powerful playing and this will be a wonderful opportunity to see him in action.

Other music includes Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony, so called because it was commissioned by this prominent Salzburg family, for the occasion of the ennoblement of Sigmund Haffner the Younger. Mozart wrote it in haste as a serenade, and later reworked it for a performance in Vienna’s Royal Burgtheatre in 1783 before the Emperor himself. He wrote to his father that "the theatre could not have been more crowded...every box was full. But what pleased me most of all was that His Majesty the Emperor was present and, goodness! -- how delighted he was and how he applauded me!"

The third piece of the concert is a cheerful Sinfonia in D major by J C Bach, a great influence on the young Mozart, who realised how Bach was opening up new possibilities for the expressive potential of instrumental music. When Bach died, Mozart wrote: “What a loss to the musical world!”

Tickets from the Bridport Music Centre and on the door at £10, including teas after the concert. Under-sixteens free entry.
