‘Magellan Circumnavigation’
Friday 20 March 2020 7.30 pm
Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
In Aid of the Chesil Sailing Trust
Five hundred years ago the Portuguese adventurer Ferdinand Magellan was making his attempt to be the first person to circumnavigate the World. The Chesil Sailing Trust is delighted to be presenting a very special musical evening at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy at 7:30 pm on Friday, 20th March to commemorate this extraordinary voyage. Poole songwriter, musician and composer Bob Whitley has joined with cellist Lee MacKenzie to perform this Musical Love Story set against the background of the voyage, they will perform in 16th century sailor’s costumes taking the audience back to the time of the voyage.
The voyage from August 1519 to September 1522 took 3 years and 28 days. Magellan set out with five ships and 280 men, just one ship and 18 men completed the circumnavigation. Magellan himself was killed in a battle at Mactan Island on 27th April 1521.
This will be an interesting and entertaining evening which is expected to be very popular, so early booking is essential.
Tickets priced at £12 each can be booked from the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on 01305 866000 or by email at reception@wpnsa.org.uk
