Weymouth's business community have been hearing from the Government's Treasury Minister Priti Patel who addressed local companies at Weymouth College.

Treasury Minister Priti Patel regularly speaks in debates in the House of Commons on business, trade and the economy but today MP Priti Patel travelled from Westminster to Weymouth to talk personally with over 70 businesses about the national economy and impact on Dorset business.

This event is the first to be organised by the recently affiliated Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce and the Dorset Chamber.  Julie Cleaver, President of the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce said “We are delighted to welcome Ms Patel to Weymouth where over 60 businesses attended the event to hear what the Minister had to say about not only the national economy but also the direct impact that this could have on Dorset business.  Subjects like business rates, skills and training are of particular interest to businesses right now, the advice from the Minister today is timely and welcome”.

Ian Girling, Chief Executive of Dorset Chamber said “Today was a fantastic opportunity for Weymouth and Portland business people to engage with a Government minister on their concerns. Providing this type of platform is a key role of Chambers of Commerce and we were thrilled to support Weymouth and Portland Chamber with this first event as part of our new affiliate relationship. It is also great and well –deserved news for the area with regard to the new additional growth funding for the area.”

Priti Patel is Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and is particularly interested in ensuring that British businesses flourish.  Her political beliefs in this area were formed around her own experiences in business, from assisting her parents who have run a number of small businesses around the South East and East of England, to her career in the communications industry where she worked in corporate communications for a variety of international companies.

Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Priti Patel, said: “I am delighted to be here in Weymouth today to meet the local businesses that are helping to drive the economy in the South West. Small and local businesses are the backbone of our economy, and the government is working hard to create the right conditions for them to prosper.  Earlier this week, the government launched the long term economic plan for the South West, and today, the government has announced it is investing a further £1 billion in local economies across England by expanding the successful Growth Deals. This is great news for Dorset, which will receive £12.6m of investment – helping to build a stronger local economy and create more jobs in the area.”
