A major planning application's been submitted to radically change the Colwell Shopping Centre in Weymouth.

Developers want to demolish the existing buildings.

They want to put just two shop units in their place, with 23 apartments and parking.

Steve Newstead - Chairman of Weymouth BID is welcoming the proposal.

"I think it's a positive move to be honest with you.  I think the Colwell Centre has always been dogged by its own history.  It really isn't the size of shop that people want or even the major retailers need.  They are small niche market shops.  I think actually it's a move forward."

"There is a housing shortage and we really need to focus on things like parking an accommodation."
